Maintanance, Disease Management And Yielding

Pests and Diseases: These factors also cause decline if not taken care of. Leaf miner, citrus psylla, aphid and lemon butterfly attack the foliage and devitalize the plants. Similarly phytophthora rot, gummosis and citrus canker cause decline. For increasing the life span of the orchards the pests and diseases should be controlled from time to time. Sometimes the fruits of an orchard become fluffy and less juicy. This situation has been observed in Musambi and Kinnow fruits. This malady is termed as citrus fruit granulation. In this the juice vesicles become dry due to drying of juice. Fruits can be easily identified by weighing it in hands. These fruits are lighter in weight than the normal ones. The TSS and acidity also decreases. The marketability is adversely affected this malady is prominent in irrigated arid regions of North India. Musambi and Blood Red are the most affected cultivars. Planting Instructions

Planting Distance: Various planting distances are being given to citrus depending upon rootstock, vigour of the cultivar, climate and soil. In North India citrus is planted at 6m x 6m apart. Kirmow which is precocious in bearing is being planted at 3m x 3m; 4m X 4m; 5 x 5m and 6m x 3m. It is also being planted as filler in mango and litchi plantations, where it is planted at 4.5 X 4.5m. However the most suitable planting distance for long term performance is 6m x 6m apart.
