Maintanance, Disease Management And Yielding

PLANT CARE Instructions on how to care for dianthus are very straight forward. Water the plants when dry and apply fertilizer every six to eight weeks. You may also work a slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting, which will release you from the need to feed the plants. Dianthus flowers are very low maintenance. They require only cool weather, rich and slightly alkaline soil, and full sun exposure. You need to water them once or twice a week and add fertilizer once a month Remove spent blooms on tall varieties, or shear back mounding plants after bloom to encourage re-bloom. After the first flowering, cut stems back to an inch or two above soil line. Divide plants every 3 to 4 years as new growth begins in the spring, lifting plants and dividing them into clumps. To grow dianthus plants in pots, choose a spot where the plant can get full sun for about 4 to 5 hours daily. If you find it difficult to match that requirement, dianthus will also tolerate part shade, but it will not grow as well, and the flowers and plant as a whole may not be as lush. To care for dianthus plants in pots make sure that the climate is cool, and that there is good air circulation at all times especially around the stems. They should also be kept away from any lingering moisture.

Planting Instructions

HOW TO GROW Plant Dianthus in full sun, partial shade or anywhere they will receive at least 6 hours of sun. The plants need fertile, well-drained soil that is alkaline. Wait until the danger of frost has passed when planting dianthus and place them at the same level they were growing in the pots, with 12 to 18 inches between the plants. Do not mulch around them. Water them only at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry and prevent mildew spotting.
